Helping one hungry child at a time!

Ok, so it's been about 3 months since my one and only post! So sorry about that, but the kids have been out of school for 4 weeks now. Summer is flying by. Not that I mind that much because I'm more of a spring/fall kinda gal! Me and heat don't get along to well.  Anyway, I wanted to write about an exiting summer activity I've got going on.
Let me start from the beginning.  A few months ago a friend of mine mentioned a little girl in her sons class who comes to school hungry every Monday. I just couldn't get this little girl off my mind, and all I could think about was what are these kids (kids who recieve free or reduced school meals) going to eat this summer.  I really felt burdened about this and decided to do some research. After a couple of weeks of "searching" the internet I finally hit the jackpot! The USDA has a program called "Summer Food Service Program or FSFP for short".  You can find out more details at (www.summerfood.usda.gov).  This program is amazing and I nor anyone I know had ever heard of it. Basically the USDA has the food to feed all of these kids but they just don't have to resources to get it to them. That is where people like you and me come in. You can sponsor a feeding site ( at a church, school, park, rec center, etc.) We (my church) decided to sponsor a feeding site at an actual subsidized apartment complex. After a little paper work and a meeting with your local Feeding America food bank you're ready to go. We take the provided food to the complex 2 days a week and feed any child under age 18 lunch and play games with them.  It's very simple, and very fun! My kids and I have totally enjoyed getting to know these kids and their parents, and I can't think of a better way to spend the summer!
Just wanted to share this with all of you in hopes that word about this program will get around and hopefully many, many, more kids will be able to be fed next summer!
